AVONDALE — Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy is thrilled to announce that senior Hattie Hamrick has been named a recipient of the Levine Scholarship, UNC Charlotte’s most prestigious merit-based award.
Hattie is one of just 20 students selected nationwide to join the 16th class of Levine Scholars. The scholarship, valued at approximately $115,000 for in-state students, covers full tuition, housing, meals, and books. It also includes access to eight semesters of community engagement, leadership development, and summer enrichment experiences, both domestically and abroad.
“When I found out I received the scholarship, I was with two of my friends and one of my mentors,” Hattie shared. “I was immediately jumping up and down, smiling, and shedding a few tears. I felt like all of my hard work had paid off in that moment, and I became instantly grateful to all my classmates and teachers for their encouragement throughout the college and scholarship application process.”
The Levine Scholarship Program partners with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) to offer an intensive outdoor expedition for incoming scholars. Hattie will travel to Wyoming this summer to complete a 22-day trek through the Wind River Range—an experience she has long anticipated.
“In my time at TJCA, I’ve learned outdoor survival and leadership skills through our Trailblazing Club under Mr. Stearns,” she said. “From week-long overnight trips full of humidity, bees, and rivers to simple overnights in western North Carolina singing under the stars, I’ve been equipped with skills that will aid me in Wyoming. I’m looking forward to testing my survival skills in the backcountry once more—this time with my newfound peers.”
Hattie plans to major in Philosophy at UNC Charlotte and hopes to add a second major as her academic journey unfolds. Her passion for the humanities has deep roots in her experience at TJCA, where she has spent the past 12 years immersed in classical education.
“I want to study Philosophy because I see critical thinking and effective problem-solving skills lacking throughout my local community and within our nation as a whole,” she said. “After I finish my undergraduate journey, I hope to attend graduate school to study law or policy and begin a career that motivates justice in the community.”
Hattie’s achievement marks another proud milestone for Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, a testament to her dedication and the school's strong academic and character education. The entire TJCA community congratulates Hattie and looks forward to following her journey as a Levine Scholar.
